My Story
I didn’t grow up dreaming about cyber security. I grew up working retail in England, learning how to deal with people before I ever learned how to deal with systems. When I moved to New Zealand, I landed a job answering phones for a telco’s Network Operations Centre — the desk you call when your internet dies mid-meeting.
That job taught me two things that still shape how I work today: how to stay calm when something’s broken and everyone’s watching, and how to explain a technical problem to someone who just wants it fixed, not lectured.
From that NOC desk, I moved into technical escalations, then major incident management — and somewhere in there, security stopped being part of the job and became the whole job. I made the shift official, studying for a diploma in cyber security while working full-time, and never looked back.
Since then, I’ve worked inside a law firm, a telco, and critical infrastructure — the kind of environments where a missed vulnerability doesn’t just mean a bad headline, it means real services, for real people, going down. I’ve sat through incidents at 2am. I’ve rebuilt a security programme that had more gaps than process. And I’ve learned that the technical fix is rarely the hard part — getting people to act on it is.
The more I worked in this field, the more I noticed a gap: most cyber security content is written by security people, for security people. Everyone else is left out even though everyone else is the one clicking the link, reusing the password, or booking the flight on public Wi-Fi.
That gap is why TechMuz exists. It’s where I write about cyber security for people who don’t work in it, alongside the tech and travel I’m genuinely into outside of work. No jargon walls, no fear-mongering just what I’d tell a friend.
